The members of Shelter from the Storm realized that their work was not complete with simply ministering to prisoners. They felt they needed to have a more complete process by helping to provide means for a fresh start after prison for the ex-inmates.

These dedicated people formed Shelter from the Storm, Inc., a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt not-for-profit, faith-based organization that provides a structured living environment for recently released male ex-offenders.

The Shelter ministers to “at-risk” men by providing spiritual, social, scholastic and economic guidance.

  • To provide interim housing for men recently released from prison
  • To assist these men in procuring employment
  • To teach and reinforce life skills
  • To continue providing spiritual guidance to these men who have already expressed interest in the Gospel

The Shelter opened its doors on November 2, 2001. The program provides residents with housing for up to six months, assistance with finding employment, and provides life-skills training. Most importantly, the Shelter gives the residents an opportunity to develop and strengthen their relationship with God through Bible studies, church attendance, and fellowship with other Christians.

The Shelter is located in a quiet neighborhood in Gainesville, Florida. The program houses up to six residents at one time. The day-to-day activities are administered by Jeffery Cobb, Program Director and resident manager. The Shelter is governed by individuals deeply committed to this ministry.

Residents are accepted into the program after a rigorous screening. Ex-offenders who have been convicted of violent crimes, sexual battery or child abuse are not eligible for the program. Residents are expected to abide by program rules and regulations, obtain gainful employment, and make a small contribution toward their upkeep.

Each resident signs a contract prior to admittance to the program that stipulates what they must do to be successful in the program. The Shelter works closely with various community and social agencies to maximize the residents chance for success. The Shelter's program is a rigorous one that requires much of it's residents and therefore is not for everyone.

Since its inception, the Shelter has successfully housed over twenty-five men. Of those men, six have have accepted the Gospel message.
